About

Zigi Rauschenberg was started by Sophie Grossmann, a young art historian with a focus on the history of textile arts, in 2020 as a private Fashion Archive that includes pieces from the late 19th to the late 20th century.

As an avid collector of antique and vintage gowns, her private collection has grown significantly over the last ten years and now includes many rare couture pieces. Always having been interested in vintage and antique garments, starting with a more practical approach as pieces of wearable art or part of her wardrobe, she started to specialize on formal attire with often having a juxtaposition between ornate and camp.

Now the collection also includes historical pieces which are not for wear but exhibition objects in a museal context or study pieces.

Highlights & Research

Taffeta and Tulle, Velvet and Silk: The archive contains around 700 pieces of evening wear by known designers and anonymous couturiers including a large collection of gowns and dresses from the 1920s and 1930s. The Textile and Fashion Research focuses on certain objects from the collection that are explored and studied as a project over a period of time since their techniques, especially embroidery and beading, as well as their use of materials and expression are especially remarkable.
